According to author & scholar specializing in ancient Indian costumes Roshen Alkazi, stitched attire, i.e., cut & sewn attire, came to South Asia from Central Asia. The trickle started during the Scythian/Parthian/Kushan invasions of the late ancient period, but it increased remarkably after Mahmud of Ghazni's incursions.
